“This is supposed to hurt really bad.”

My Coach, Bob Sevene, coached Joan Benoit to the Olympic Gold medal in the 1984 marathon and numerous other national champions and Olympians like myself, so when he speaks I listen- except for the times I don’t. When I first started training hard, I distinctly remember his advice, “You don’t have to be on your hands and knees after ever workout.” I was really young then, I am pretty sure I said, “Yes, I do!!!”

Well, in my wisdom, I have learned he was right. Consistency is the key, and trashing yourself day in and day out just leads to tired legs and a tired mind, and heaven forbid- injury. Today, however, was an exception to the rule. At the end of my track workout, he wanted a fast 1200 meters and prefaced it by saying, “This is supposed to hurt really bad.” Awesome…and it did! Ahhh the track…lets’s you know what you are made of, and no way to fake your fitness.
